What is the Circular Economy?

there is a wealth of opportunity in the circular economy.

Imagine your business produces no waste, keeps products and materials in production for as long as possible, and contributes towards regenerating nature.

That’s the circular economy. Sounds great huh?

We can look to Mother Nature for a very effective example of a circular economy.

Plants use carbon dioxide and nutrients to grow and produce oxygen.

Animals then use this oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and nutrients.

The carbon dioxide produced by the animal is then used by the plants and so on.

Nothing is wasted in this closed-loop system.

As a society, we have been running a linear economy - we take from nature to make what we need and then dispose of it when finished - we ‘take, make, waste.’

This linear economy model is not sustainable.

The Circular Economy seeks to reuse and regenerate materials and products to maximise their lifespan.

This means eliminating the TAKE-MAKE-WASTE model and building opportunity throughout a product’s lifecycle, aiming to infinitely use the product and/or its materials.

High-level there are three main goals to achieving a Circular Economy:

becoming circular

Moving to a circular business doesn’t happen overnight, but it will be one of the best ways to futureproof your business.

Climate change is happening and ultimately we are going to need to adapt the way we live and do business for survival. Companies that use foresight and prepare for these changes before their hand is forced will reap the benefits.

  • How futureproof are the materials in your products?

  • How would the country and state environmental goals affect your business?

  • Would you be ready for any law changes around electric vehicles, congestion charges, shipping limitations, or increased waste disposal charges?
